After painful loses in first two rounds, The Rest of the World team showed amazing fighting spirit.
In the 3rd round we saw a record 5 draws, none of the guests lost a game. The only, very important win, was scored by Irina Bulmaga.

Romanian WGM faced leader of polish women chess GM Monika Soćko. After the opening it seemed Monika acheived a perfect position, despite playing black pieces. However, the middle game showed that White’s attack was no to be underestimated and Irina crushed Black’s king-side with a final…

Fourth round was one of the most intense ones. After 4.5 hours half of the games were still unfinished! After a great fight and a win by Monika Socko, Polish Team did not manage to save the day.

The result was decided thanks to Anna Zatonskih and Jovanka Houska. They were fighting for a full point almost 5h with the youngest polish participants. Those games were also the first loses for Alicja and Julia.

This win was a breaking point in the Match and The Rest of the World overtook the lead. Thanks to their wins in rapid and Fischer’s competitions they suddenly were in a very comfortable position.
So it all meant that the 5th game was a decisive one, especially for Polish Team. Only a win in the last round could keep them in the game.

After a draw between Karina Cyfka and Meri Arabidze the first resultative game was a win by Irina Bulmaga. Irina once again won in a very nice aggressive style. Afterwards it got even more intense! Monika Socko managed to even out the score, after winning with one of the most dangerous junior players in the world – Olga Badelka.
Maybe you can try to find yourself, how did our GM play in a position below. What should Black play?
29…Bxf2!! And Black’s Queen is ready to jump to a3. White has no defence anymore.
Unfortunately the World Team quickly took over again, as Anastasia Bodnaruk scored a win against Joanna Majdan. However once again Polish girls kept on fighting and Alicja Śliwicka won a great game playing Black….crushing on the black squares!
Then everything was up to Jolanta Zawadzka’s game, who was trying to realise a minimal advantage against Anna Zatonskih. Experienced USA player did not give any real chances and game finished peacefully.
Despite a great fight by Polish Team, they did not manage to keep the suspence and we already have the winners – The Rest of the World Team. Let’s still support the girls tomorrow as our Festival is not only about the result, but mainly about celebrating chess, especially women chess and our amazing players 😉
